When my kids were little, they loved to make art projects with their gluesticks and paper. As they ran to me waving their masterpieces in the air, the smiles on their little faces stretched ever so wide, they exclaimed, "Mommy, look what I made you!"
Some pieces were a bit askew. There was a rip here, a tear there. A fingerprint or two danced along the surface. Yet it was colorful and made with love. And they did it for me!
My daughter was first. "Do you like it, mommy?"
Love and joy flooded my soul. "It's beautiful, honey!"
My son chimed in, "I made one too. But I messed up a little right here. See?" A slight frown erased his smile.
I hugged him as we admired his masterpiece together. "Well, sweetie, I think it's just perfect."
Have you ever thought of yourself as the glue that holds onto your loved ones ever so tightly, trying to keep them in their places? You try to set a good example and create the perfect picture. You need to be the perfect Christian wife, the perfect Christian mom, the perfect Christian fill-in-the-blank. It's not easy, is it? It's messy and sticky. Pieces fall apart or become crooked. Sometimes your edges curl. Oftentimes, things just won't stick no matter how much "glue" you use.
But despite the ugly residue on the surface or the slightly misplaced pieces, the Lord sees a masterpiece. You are His masterpiece. Regardless of how hard we try to create that perfect picture, we are imperfect and flawed. But as we display our excitement and love for Him, as we continue to trust Him and obey (even though we make mistakes along the way), He is filled with joy. He is pleased to know that we are trying and that we love Him.
Everything you do, do it for Him. Do it with love. You are His gluestick masterpiece. Messy and beautiful.
"I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well."
~Psalm 139:14 (NKJV)
