Hello, My Name Is

May 27, 2015

If you're familiar with Matthew West, you probably read the title of this blog post and immediately had the song stuck in your head before you even played the video. Good! The lyrics remind us that negative voices do not define us.

You've probably heard the saying, "Sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me." Well, that's a bunch of bologna. Names do hurt. Names others call us. Names we give ourselves. Perhaps you've been led to believe that you're naive, gullible, stupid, selfish, fat, old, or ugly. It does hurt.

Maybe you're fixated on the regrets and defeat in your life. You've made some mistakes. Maybe you've made some really big mistakes. And you've been beating yourself up for a long time.

There's good news! Our identity is not defined by these labels, words, or thoughts. Our identity comes from our loving Heavenly Father who knows we are broken and yet He still sees us as beautiful. He does not see the flaws and imperfections. He sees His children. Perfect. Made in His own image. And He loves us. He loves you.

You are a child of the one true King.

Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

God made us in the image of Christ. And we know that Christ is perfect. So we are perfect. Beautiful. Wrapped in grace.

Matthew 6:48 confirms this for us: "Therefore, you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect."

We should be filled with joy because we are made new and we are perfect. We are no longer defined by all the wreckage behind because we are children of the king! That's our identity.

Remove the negative names you've written on your heart. And from now on remember who you really are: a child of the King!
