Have you ever felt like you just needed a break? Everything - even the simplest tasks - become too much to handle. I think God has been trying to get my attention lately. Our Sunday school class recently finished a six-week lesson on being "Overwhelmed." Our women's Bible study group is in the midst of "The Best Yes," (which places strong emphasis on learning to say 'no'). And I am receiving signals in different areas of my life that are shouting:
Take a break!
You need to rest!
So with the tools I recently acquired, the wisdom I gained, and lots of prayer, I'm finally getting some rest (which is why you haven't seen a blog post lately). I've been taking a break. A break from social media, a break from my never-ending "to do" list, a break from it all, and taking some time to focus on me. This is not a selfish act. It's a necessary step. One which will allow me to focus on my health and restore my soul.
In fact, a very wise woman I know shared this diagram with me, which shows the order in which our priorities should be.
As you can see, Self belongs at the top of the pyramid after God and before everything else. This reminds me of the instructions we are given from flight attendants: In case of a loss in pressure, oxygen masks will drop from above. Place your own mask on yourself before attempting to help anyone else. This advice could be life saving.
Taking a break and getting some much needed rest could be life saving.
Jesus urges us to rest. Mark 6:31 says, "And He said to them, 'Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.' For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat."
Listen to the instructions you are receiving. Listen to your body. Listen to your emotions, your attitude, and your heart. If you need to take a break and get some rest, I highly recommend you do so.
